The conservatives in Canada have ousted the liberal government of Paul Martin. And one of the first legislative goals on presumptive Prime Minister Stephen Harper ’ s plate is, naturally, the restoration of marriage as a union between men and women. We have a feeling most Canadians would tell us that Harper ’ s move is just to mollify the social conservatives who supported him, and that a vote doesn ’ t stand much chance of passing in Parliament, after which the issue will be put to rest. Still though, there was a time when we heard there was no way Harper would get elected in the first place.

Why, then, should he not be filibustered? Because it will make Dems look sleazy and desperate. What they need to do is quit being so ideological and start being a bit more pragmatic. Short term, a filibuster will not do them any good. Long term, a filibuster will not do them any good. When you have Scott Mcclellan making very personal attacks on John Kerry's "elitism" you know the fight is a lost cause.

Yesterday, Senator Ted Kennedy and I told our colleagues that we supported a filibuster of Judge Alito's nomination for the Supreme Court. And we weren't alone. But the bottom line is that it takes more than two or three people to filibuster successfully. It's not "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." If you want to stop Judge Alito from becoming Justice Alito, use your own email list and organize. We can't just preach to our own choir. We need to prove to everyone - from our friends and neighbors to our fellow Senators - that the American people know Judge Alito will take our country in the wrong direction, and they expect something to be done about it.

Elements of the Palestinian Authority security services controlled by Fatah figures may be unwilling to put themselves under the control of a Hamas-led authority, which could lead to the collapse of what is left of the Authority's structure, or even its break-up into personal militias. Israel, and the United States which refuses to accept the outcome of the election may see an interest in encouraging such an internal conflict. Israel is likely to use Hamas'win as a further pretext to tighten repression and accelerate its unilateral imposition of walls and settlements on the West Bank designed to annex the maximum number of land with the minimum not of Palestinians. Such developments increase the risks of a dramatic escalation of Israeli-palestinian violence...

ummm... not that i'm obsessed with project runway or anything... well, maybe i am. it's just been a long time since i've really had a favorite show on tv. anyways, if you like project runway i recommend that you check out the bonus video on bravotv.com. it is quite hilarious especially when santino does an impression of what tim gunn would sound like if he sang "closer" by nine inch nails.

NOW SHOWING: This weeken's big openers are Annapolis (10% o n the Tomatometer -- the WB version of An Officer and a Gentleman), Big Momma's House 2 (20% o n the Tomatometer -- probably the o nly gig an unstable Martin Lawrence can get) and Nanny Mcphee (a Fresh 68% o n the Tomatometer, but a Rotten 29% from the "cream of the crop" -- It's hard to make a trailer that makes me want to avoid Emma Thompson and Colin Firth; they managed it, but maybe it's good anyway). Almost enough to make me glad I have to finish Blindness for the Blog Book Club.

(Washington, D.C., January 25, 2006) - In a reversal of policy, the United States on Monday backed an Iranian initiative to deny United Nations consultative status to organizations working to protect the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. In a letter to Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, a coalition of 40 organizations, led by the Human Rights Campaign, Human Rights Watch, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, called for an explanation of the vote which aligned the United States with governments that have long repressed the rights of sexual minorities.

Liberal prof/blogger Juan Cole contributes an election recap to Salon titled "How do you like your democracy now, Mr. Bush?" Building on Cole, Marc Cooper writes: "The elections pushed relentlessly by the Bush administration have produced the least favorable results -- for all parties involved.... Defusing Hamas -- if possible -- will also require what Reagan used to call'constructive engagement'but of which his political heirs remain blissfully and recklessly ignorant. I can't think of a worse moment to have the Bushies in charge."

Finally! Something to get excited about! I hate to say it, but Master P must GO! The poor man will never be a dancer. George Hamilton? For an old man, he still has some moves - not many, but some. Jerry Rice benefitted from his ballet lesson. His posture tonight was much, much better; and he didn't appear to be running for a pass either. Drew Lachey was Fantastic! The best Passo Doble I've ever seen by a non-pro! Spectacular! Stacey Keibler's Foxtrot was excellent, but she appears to tower over her partner and sometimes that's a problem. Tia Carrere's Foxtrot was seamless and elegant. She's so, so easy to watch. The dance of the night was Lisa Rinna's Passo Doble. She NAILED it! My money is still on Drew, but Lisa, Tia and Stacey will make him work for it.

Ken Salazar and Mary Landrieu have said they will oppose a filibuster and three Democrats - KKK Byrd, Ben Nelson and Tim Johnson - have said they will vote in favor of Alito ’ s confirmation. That means if every Republican votes for cloture, that is 60 votes and Kerry ’ s attempt to hold up the vote will go down in embarrassing flames. And we have still yet to hear how Red State Democrats Kent Conrad, Byron Dorgan and Mark Pryor will vote and there are more than a few Democrats who have already said they oppose Alito, but have expressed reluctance to engage in a filibuster
